Are you familiar with the Hydrologic Cycle? It can be defined as the process by which water cycles through our planets’ atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere.
In case it’s been awhile since Earth Science class, here’s a diagram for visual reference:
When we pave surfaces, we disrupt the absorption of water into the ground and create more runoff. The most direct consequences of this are increased flooding and erosion, as streams and rivers struggle to contain the higher and faster water flow. Living in Manitoba, we know all too well about floods!
This also increases nutrient loading in local bodies of water as more organic material is swept into waterways. These nutrients, such as phosphorous, contribute to the kind of algae blooms we’ve recently seen in Lake Winnipeg. The algae depletes the oxygen levels in the water and suffocates fish and other aquatic life. It also makes for unsafe swimming conditions, greatly affecting recreational activities during our short summer months.
When it comes to landscaping, an easy solution is to install permeable pavers. These pavers allow for water to filter through into the ground below, reducing runoff and helping to replenish groundwater.
